Postdoctoral Researcher (100%, E13 TVL)
The Institute for Near Eastern and East Asian Languages and Civilizations—Sinology at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) invites applications for the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) with an interest in modern Chinese history, global/transnational historiography and/or East Asian conceptual history of the 19-20th century. The position is part of the interdisciplinary project “Writing History with China—Chinese Concepts in Transnational Historiography” funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (2020-27).
In cooperation with the Department of History (Chair of Modern and Contemporary History) at FAU this project is going to focus on epistemologies and methodologies of historical knowledge production in contemporary China while inquiring the potential contributions of publications of historians in the Sinophone sphere to a transnational discourse of history writing that goes beyond the area studies. Together with the project leader Prof. Marc Matten the applicant will conduct research on the social, political and cultural conditions of writing and translating key texts on global/transnational history in China. The Postdoctoral Researcher will further contribute to the compilation of a bilingual handbook on Key Concepts in Modern Chinese Historiography.
The successful candidate is expected to have
– A PhD in Chinese studies, historical sciences or related disciplines,
– Strong interest in conceptual history and/or global/transnational historiography,
– Preferably research experience in China, Hong Kong and/or Taiwan,
– Excellent knowledge of working languages Chinese and English.
The position is to be filled by October 2020, the prospective duration of the project is seven years.
